#KnowTheTerm: Minimalism
Fiidaa Art would like to introduce a new series: #KnowTheTerm! In this series, we'll be educating our viewers on various art terminologies, and their respective characteristics and origins. We'll also be featuring our brilliant artists' works and collections for those interested in such styles.
First up is Minimalism: according to Tate, Minimalism is an extreme form of abstract art developed in the USA in the 1960s and typified by artworks composed of simple geometric shapes based on the square and the rectangle. 🔲 A rejection of the Abstract Expressionist movement, minimalists wanted to immerse their viewers in an experience which would be purer, isolated from emotion and reality, and more potent than ever before.
Traits of minimalism include:
- a variety of geometric shapes and patterns
- as few forms as possible
- few variations in colour and shape, used in repetition
- often utilizing industrial, or nontypical, materials
- precise edges and blatant borders
- monochromatism
You may have seen the iconic work of Piet Mondrian before; the Dutch artist is considered to be an originator of minimalism.
Our artists, Radhika Choudhary and Carmen Martini, create works that are an excellent exemplar of this minimalistic style. Placement and colour—creation is up to the imagination! Playful and engaging, tread though the visual playground of Radhika's and Carmen's works. Their art is guaranteed to add liveliness and fun to any setting, providing a much-needed escape from the difficulties and mundane of everyday life.
Enter the playful world of Sherwan Rozan's art, where everyday items are transformed into abstract works of geometric shapes and block colors. 🔷🟨🔴 His minimalistic style relies on clean-cut shapes and lines, carefully arranged to create a fun interplay of elements. The result is a striking balance that evokes joy and wonder in viewers.
Dot paintings are another product of minimalist art. Damien Hirst's famous dot series was produced since the mid-1980s:
Charles Wong, a dot artist onboard with us, creates works made up of dotted calligraphic letters in various languages, symbolizing a unique emotion or concept. He strives to create artworks that are both visually appealing and thought provoking. Featuring "GOD":
Colours are a key facet of minimalism—typically only one or a few are used. Although simple, these designs hold a beauty that is hard to miss. Check out this work by our artist Gillian Beal.
We also noted a minimalist style can encompass few variations in colour and shape, used in repetition. Yoon Jungeun—our new artist—creates uniformly-textured abstract works with an underlying labour-intensive production process.
Another noteworthy artist of ours to mention is Lian Ng. His geometric shapes and patterns truly exude a minimalistic quality.
